North East Grid Natural Gas Pipeline Project Inaugurated in Sikkim's Pakyong District

Pakyong: The North East Grid Natural Gas Pipeline Project, a significant endeavor aimed at connecting state capitals, major cities, and demand centers across the eight North Eastern States, was inaugurated in Pakyong district, Sikkim. The auspicious event, organized by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited, witnessed the presence of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who expressed his support for the project’s successful implementation.

Symbolic Ground-Breaking Ceremony

The ceremony commenced with a traditional bhumi pujan, signifying the commencement of the project. The pipeline’s symbolic welding marked an important milestone in its progress, showcasing the commitment towards establishing a robust gas infrastructure in the region.

Implementation by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited

The North East Gas Grid Project is being implemented by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL), a joint venture company of five Petroleum PSUs, including IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, OIL, and NRL. With an estimated cost of Rs 9265 crore, the project aims to establish a gas pipeline network that connects the state capitals, major cities, and demand centers across the eight North Eastern States.

Ensuring Consistent Gas Supply

Once completed, the North East Gas Grid will be integrated with the National Gas Grid, ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of natural gas to all northeastern states. The Siliguri-Gangtok section of the pipeline, covering a length of 197 km, including 47 km within Sikkim, will traverse the Reshi Border to Ranipool near Saramsa Garden. The pipeline’s route follows NH 717A, enabling efficient connectivity and accessibility.

Governor’s Support and Environmental Benefits

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya expressed his wholehearted support for the North East Grid Natural Gas Project in Sikkim. He assured the cooperation of the Government of Sikkim in the project’s successful implementation and recognized the immense opportunities it would bring, particularly in terms of accelerated industrial growth.

Furthermore, the Governor highlighted the environmental benefits of natural gas as a clean fuel, emphasizing its role in maintaining a cleaner environment with minimal carbon emissions. He stressed the significance of adopting clean energy sources to ensure the well-being of future generations. The Governor also emphasized that the availability of natural gas would contribute to overall development and improved quality of life for the citizens of Sikkim, fostering rapid progress and prosperity.

As the North East Grid Natural Gas Pipeline Project takes shape, it holds the promise of transforming the energy landscape of Sikkim and the entire North Eastern region, providing a sustainable and cleaner fuel source for various sectors and promoting economic growth.
