United We Stand: Gangtok

United We Stand NGO from Gangtok

United We Stand goes beyond ‘breaking the silence’ and has developed a powerful voice that strives to mainstream the discussion about Incest/C.S.A. in Gangtok and include it in social dialogue.

“Our mission is to empower youths, families, communities and society with prevention and intervention skills to reduce the occurrence of child abuse, rape and murder.”

We sat down with Lawrence Sherpa and Reshika Chettri to learn about the ideals of United We Stand. The excerpts of our conversation are below.

Give a brief info about your N.G.O United We Stand?

Reshika: Our N.G.O. United We Stand is formed by youths and adults and our mission is to empower youths, families, and society with prevention and intervention skills to reduce the occurrence of child abuse, rape and murder.

What made you start your United We Stand  and what problem does it solve?

Lawrence: The main thing that made us start our N.G.O. was the fact that humanity is getting lesser and we see people abusing one another right in front of us, young age group kids smoking and getting addicted, also the rape, molestation, and discrimination. We knew there was great opportunity to build a N.G.O where passionate citizens could work together on solutions for a better society.

Where is your N.G.O. based? Do you think it is the best place for you?

Reshika: Our N.G.O. is based out in Gangtok. It is the best place because it is Sikkim’s heart; a growing city with a population of almost 2-3 lakh people and is at a position where various new problems are mounting.

Tell us about your team/members and how did you meet each other?

Lawrence: We were a group of five people but now we have more than 100 active members. Since we are a non governmental organization, we don’t have a big team to carry out all our work. In the Management team, we have like 10-12 people and I over look all the departments for smooth functioning.

Humanity should be our race. Love should be our religion.

Have you raised funding? If yes, then we would love to know the details. Also, how can our readers stay connected with you?

Reshika: Yes, we’ve raised funds. We have raised funds from members to help the needy people and donation for Orphanages. Being said that we still have not been able to raise enough funding.
