Sikkim School Closures

Gangtok: In the wake of severe weather conditions brought about by floods and the threat of heavy rainfall, the Education Department of the Sikkim government has announced the extension of school closures in the state. All educational institutions, both government and private, including universities, colleges, and schools, will now remain closed until October 15.

Response to Floods and Bad Weather

The decision to extend the school closures came after Sikkim faced flooding caused by a glacial lake outburst from Lhonak Lake on October 4. Initially, the government had declared that government and private schools in flood-affected districts of Gangtok, Mangan, Pakyong, and Namchi would be closed until October 8. However, the Education Department reevaluated the situation and opted for an extended closure period.

Impact on Roads and Transportation

Sikkim’s inclement weather has not only disrupted daily life but has also severely affected transportation. The Sikkim police had previously notified the public about numerous blocked roads across the state due to adverse weather conditions. These road blockages have hampered travel and transportation in the region, contributing to the decision to keep educational institutions closed for an extended period.

Meteorological Warnings

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of exceptionally heavy rainfall over Sikkim, intensifying concerns about further disruption and safety risks. These warnings have prompted authorities to take precautionary measures, including the extended closure of schools, to ensure the safety of students and residents in the affected areas.

As the situation continues to evolve, the government of Sikkim is closely monitoring weather forecasts and working diligently to address the challenges posed by the inclement weather conditions. The safety and well-being of the people of Sikkim remain a top priority, and measures will be adjusted as needed to respond effectively to the changing weather patterns and any resulting challenges.
