Gangtok, Sikkim – A collision between a Sikkim Nationalised Transport passenger bus and a service delivery truck inside the Topakhani tunnel on National Highway 10 near Singtam town has left five individuals injured. The incident occurred at approximately 8 am on Monday, creating a concerning situation in the region.

Incident Details

The collision took place as the bus, which was en route from Dongeythang in the Khamdong-Singtam constituency to Gangtok, collided with the truck within the tunnel. This incident highlights the vulnerability of travel within tunnels and raises questions about safety measures in such confined spaces.

Injuries Reported

The bus driver sustained an injury to his leg in the collision, while four other passengers also suffered minor injuries. Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, and some of the injured individuals were promptly transported to the Singtam District Hospital. For those requiring further medical attention, they were referred to the Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok for comprehensive care.

Recent Incidents Raise Concerns

This is not the first vehicular collision incident to have occurred in the region. In July, a bus under the Sikkim Nationalised Transport collided with a Sikkim-registered SUV at Mamkhola, near Bhalukhola on NH10, which connects Siliguri and Gangtok. These incidents spotlight the importance of enhanced road safety protocols, particularly on frequently traveled routes like NH10.

With such accidents occurring in quick succession, local authorities and transportation agencies are under increased pressure to reassess and reinforce safety measures.
